Florida Drunk Driving Statistics
In 2000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, released the results of a study on drunk driving in Florida. You may be shocked to learn how common—and costly—drunk driving is in the state of Florida. Thousands of lives and billions of dollars could be saved each year, simply by decreasing the number of drunk drivers on the road.
Drunk Driving Injuries and Fatalities
Alcohol-related accidents are more deadly than other types of crashes. It is estimated that 135,300 accidents involving alcohol occurred on Florida roadways. 1,191 people were killed and 49,100 people were injured. Drivers with a BAC of 0.10% and above were responsible for approximately 128,800 of those crashes that injured 43,000 people and killed 930 others. It is not only drivers with an extremely high BACs who are killing and injuring others on the road; drivers with BACs below the legal limit of 0.08% were involved in 4,300 crashes that injured 4,200 people and killed 185.
The Cost of Drunk Driving: Florida Has to Pay
The costs of drunk driving are not limited to fines that a convicted drunk driver may have to pay, or the hospital bills of someone who has been injured as a result of a drunk driving accident. For each drink that is consumed, it costs the state $1 in crash-related costs. Citizens other than the drunk driver pay for $0.60 (or 60%) of each drink. Drunk driving accidents in Florida cost approximately $7.8 billion on in 2000. Of that, Florida taxpayers picked up the tab for over $4.8 billion.
Other Monetary Penalties
If you are convicted a DUI or causing an accident that results in death or injury after driving under the influence, be prepared to pay. Not only could you face felony charges and time in prison, but you will be responsible for exorbitant fines. You may lose your license and, as a convicted felon, be stripped of certain rights. If your license is ever restored, your insurance rates will skyrocket. If you are facing a DUI charge, it is important to contact an experienced and qualified DUI defense attorney as soon as possible.
